In the Mind

It is only natural to be drawn to certain aspects of this world.  For some people, it might be the way things smell or taste. For others, it is the appearance which draws in their attention. For me, it is movement, with both color and form made naturally or artificially. Movement and color are the two aspects my eyes grasp addictively. It could be the color of a door or the texture of a brick building. The curiosity comes to the point where I find myself staring, wondering what a structure might look like if the colored lines were another color or the formed shapes were completely changed into a different shape. To satisfy this curiosity, I feel compelled to make those changes, marks etc. on the photographs using oil pastel and gel pen.

In the Mind is a series of work which expands on the concept of what it could be like inside one’s head; particularly my head and my own pre-visualization. As someone who looks at photographers and surrealist such as Peter Fraser, Martin Stranka, John Baldessari and many more for influence, I believe stand-alone objects, textures and places we pass everyday hold importance and impact us even when we do not realize it. The purpose of In the Mind is impart to fool the eye, make viewers see something they would not expect. The marking acts as the deceiver, the photograph the foundation. Each individual line carries its own weight. Creating harmony between the photograph and the fantasy vision is a principal objective. The viewer will be the judge.
